OECD survey gives Japan top marks for 'adult skills' in literacy, numeracy

    A new international survey of "adult skills" placed Japan at the top of 24 countries and regions in literacy and  numeracy, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said Oct. 8.     Education ministry officials attributed the results to an excellence in pedagogical functions of Japan's society, including at schools and workplaces. "Compulsory education in Japan emphasizes basic skills that are required in life," a ministry official said. Hiroshima marks 67th anniversary of A-bomb attack

TOKYO, AUG 06 - Hiroshima marked the 67th anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack on Monday with a call for the elimination of nuclear arsenals. About 50,000 people gathered in Hiroshima's peace park near the epicenter of the 1945 blast that destroyed most of the city and killed as many as 140,000 people. A second atomic bombing Aug. 9 that year in Nagasaki killed tens of thousands more and prompted Japan to surrender to the World War II Allies. The ceremony, attended by representatives of about 70 countries, began with the ringing of a temple bell and a moment of silence. Tokyo court scraps writ against review of Mainali’s case

KATHMANDU, JUL 31 - The Tokyo High Court on Tuesday scrapped the writ filed by the prosecutors against review of Govinda Mainali’s case. Earlier, Mainali, got a clean-chit in a murder case after erroneously serving 15 years in a Japanese jail. The prosecutors had filed a writ objecting the court's decision to grant a retrial for Mainali. The high court has issued directives to close the case after reviewing it. With the verdict, Mainali's family in the Capital saw no boundaries of happiness. Mainali was arrested and jailed on charges of rape and murder of a Japanese woman in 1997. Japan floods: 250,000 people ordered to leave homes

About 250,000 people have been ordered to leave their homes to avoid floods caused by torrential rainfall in south-west Japan, officials say. Flooding and landslides on the southern island of Kyushu have left at least 20 people dead in the past three days.
