Tokyo court scraps writ against review of Mainali’s case

KATHMANDU, JUL 31 - The Tokyo High Court on Tuesday scrapped the writ filed by the prosecutors against review of Govinda Mainali’s case.

Earlier, Mainali, got a clean-chit in a murder case after erroneously serving 15 years in a Japanese jail. The prosecutors had filed a writ objecting the court's decision to grant a retrial for Mainali. The high court has issued directives to close the case after reviewing it.

With the verdict, Mainali's family in the Capital saw no boundaries of happiness. Mainali was arrested and jailed on charges of rape and murder of a Japanese woman in 1997. However, after a recent DNA test contradicted the guilty verdict against Mainali, the Tokya High Court acquitted him of the charges after serving 15 years in prison.

Mainali, hailing from Ilam district, was arrested for ‘overstay’ in March of 1997. The charges of rape and murder were pressed on him after his arrest.
